plexus cyst/ clenched hands/ trisomy 18

My doctor said my baby girl is having a bilateral choroid plexus cyst in her brain with no other abnormalities, so that raise the percentage of trisomy 18 by just a tiny bit. They said don’t worry about it but I can’t help it. I just took the NIPT test and waiting for the result.

Below are pictures of my baby’s hands and her face. Does it look like she has clenched hands?

Her fists do look clenched, but that’s not indicative of anything. They’re often like that in utero as well as newborns. Their hands don’t begin to relax until around 3 months old.

I know this is so much easier said than done, but try not to worry. My baby (current pregnancy) had the same cysts on her brain and also a EIF on the heart( soft markers for downs). My doctor said usually they would just say to get genetic testing but I had already done it and mine was the lowest risk, so they weren’t worried. By the next ultrasound 4 weeks later the cysts were gone! We still have the heart EIF but if there’s no other indicators they don’t worry about those markers and they can be considered a “normal variant.” Remember they are a “soft” marker for a reason. I did some reading and in the medical community they feel like those indicators can be misleading now that we are in the age of easily accessible genetic tests like NIPT which are more reliable. I know it’s so hard since I was just going through the same, but chances are baby is 100% fine. We can’t change what’s going on in there, so try to soak in the pregnancy while you can- it’s over so quick! 💗💗💗💗

I have one softer marker, they barely even qualified it as a soft marker… But, “thought they should tell me. “It’s so hard not knowing. I just got my genetic testing done, it’s a good thing you got yours done early. Probably help with the anxiety!

My anatomy scan showed that the nasal bridge was small. Which is a marker for down syndrome, trisomy 21. They said not to worry, and I went for an IPT testing as well. Went to Fridays ago and I’m still waiting.I have googled everything, stared at my new and old ultrasounds over and over to see if I missed something or could tell a difference. It’s so hard though. Keep your spirits up and try to keep busy during the weight. Luckily the holidays are in swing, so it’s a little easier to be distracted. If anything comes back different than normal, they will send you for further testing. I’m hoping we have no issues.

My baby has a choroid plexus cyst as well, I had my anatomy scan on Tuesday and we found this out. The hands also seemed to be in fists but a high risk doctor came in to check and baby opened its hands right up. I also had a NIPT test done around 11 weeks and everything came back low risk. These are just soft markers, I would try not to worry! The high risk doctor said she wasn’t concerned about our baby at all & that he/she (we are team green) was perfectly healthy! I’ve read about a lot of babies having choroid plexus cysts and them shrinking/dissolving by 32 weeks.

Was the clenching constant? That’s when it can be a sign!

Since baby girl doesn’t have any other abnormalities as you said, I wouldn’t panic yet. My baby boy has a shrinking choroid plexus cyst, and my doctors have assured me that with no other markers for trisomy 18, it’s a REALLY (shockingly) common occurrence that they’re trying to normalize! Most babies can get CPC’s and they just resolve over time; and they carry no neurological or physical complications if they don’t shrink quickly. I got the NIPT at 12 weeks, so he was “cleared” as not having T18 and we are just following that cyst to make sure it shrinks (yesterday’s scan at 24w shows shrinking.) As for baby’s hands, they do look closed but as another user has stated, it’s not indicative of anything! Have you had a previous ultrasound where you’ve seen fingers opened? Regardless, I’m praying for y’all and the hopes of good news from your NIPT. Wishing you the best, happiest and healthiest rest of your pregnancy💛 Please keep us updated if you can:)
