For me it was impossible. I was ovulating but breastfeeding was causing me to ovulate late and have a short luteal phase. We tried for 12 months and then my ob prescribed clomid and we got pregnant the first month, while I was still nursing.

Odd one out but breastfeeding, when you’re following and fall under the strict requirements for it, is actually 98% effective at preventing pregnancy and there is studies that have proven this. It’s referred to as LAM, Lactational Amenorrhea Method. The requirements are that you are under 6 months postpartum, are breastfeeding consistently like every 2-3 hours throughout the day and night, have not had a single period, and you have not introduced any bottles, pacifier, or solids. Planned parenthood is not the only site that sources my claims, if you google it uou will find several medical accredited sites that back up LAM. I suggest that if you plan to use LAM, you also implement BBT charting and OPKs to successfully see when your first ovulation leading to first menstruation will occur postpartum.

Breastfeeding is not a form of birth control. If you don’t want to get pregnant you need to use some kind of birth control method. You never know when ovulation starts back postpartum till you get your period and you would have already ovulated at that point. 
Plenty of women go back to normal cycles while exclusively breastfeeding.
