My girlfriend wants an open relationship

My girlfriend out of nowhere told me she wanted an open relationship; when I asked her is she sure cause does she know what that really means. We had to educate our selfs a little bit as everyone’s open relationship is quit different . I didn’t really wanna do it but I don’t want to loose my girlfriend I have been with for 8 years. What do I do or what do I think
