Projectile vomit after formula switch

Tiffany • 25 years old. Baby #3 due August 17!

My son is 3 months old and he was on Similac Isomil since he was about a month old. He had very bad reflux before we made the switch to the Isomil. We tried Similac Sensitive, Gerber Soothe (purple can) and the Isomil.

Well, yesterday I switched him back to Gerber Sooth from Similac Isomil. He had his first bottle of it around 6:45 PM and fell asleep at my sisters house. He drank about 2 ounces. He wailed in the car ride home which is normal and nothing I could really do. We got home around 9:30 and he fell back asleep in his car seat so I put him into bed. He woke up around 12:30 just an hour ago and I made him a 4 ounce bottle and he took about 2 ounces and PROJECTILE VOMITED EVERYTHING. I mean it just kept going and going and he was gasping for air it scared the shit out of me. Now, it’s 1:30 in the morning, he just fell back asleep. He refused the bottle.. would spit out the formula and I didn’t want to try to get him to eat because I didn’t want him to throw up again. What do I do? Do I switch him back to the Isomil or keep trying with the Gerber Soothe? PLEASE HELP😞

Why did you take him off the milk for reflux?

Both my boys have had reflux bad . It’s never gone away and keeping them on the reflux milk the whole time is the only thing that has worked for them. I would put him back onto the reflux milk and give warm baths and stuff to try and help with reflux

His pediatrician said to switch him to the soy from the Gerber. At his last appointment, he said to switch him whenever his reflux had diminished and I switched also because he was constipated. I guess I should have put that in the post.

I had the very same problem with the gerber soothe! She would projectile the whole bottle! It became so bad she ended up have diarrhea on top of that and we actually had to go to the ER because her ped was scared she’d became dehydrated! It was TERRIBLE!!!

Talk to your pediatrician. I had similar issues with my son who will be 4 months next week. He had to be put in Similac Alimentum and we believe he has a milk protein intolerance. It takes 1-2 weeks to fully see a difference but you can start seeing improvements when you make the switch if that is a concern. My daughter also had to be on it. Their reflux improved dramatically and my daughter grew out of the issue and has no problem with dairy products now. She is 3. Best of luck to you

Why did you switch him in the first place? I would definitely not feed him the Gerber one anymore, if it caused him to be that uncomfortable and sick.

I see. So now he is taking the Gerber without throwing up? I would honestly ask the doctor. By your post I understood that he wasn’t taking the Gerber, and it still caused him to throw up.

He wasn’t uncomfortable at all. He was just crying from the car ride. He actually is very happy, more than what he has been since he’s had a couple of bottles. He had very hard poops and that formula had the probiotic in it and I figured it was because of the soy that he was so constipated.
