Godparents?

Question

My husband and I were chosen as godparents for my friends newborn pretty recently and it got me thinking as to who we would choose as our child's godparents.

After much consideration all I could think of is ... Do we even need godparents? I mean what is the point if we both died wouldn't the child go to a family member anyway?

Are we legally required to have godparents? Anyone have any insight?

It's a religious thing mainly. Making sure that the child will be brought up in your church if anything happened to you. It's nothing to do with custody. It holds no legal value if you pass and who would be guardians. That's why the god parents are present during the baptism and such. They take a vow to make sure the child will be raised with the churches values

A God parent is the parents choosing who would raise their child in their faith should they pass away. A legal guardian is who will have legal guardianship and rights of your child in the event of your death. One is for church and one is for legal/state. Neither are required. But having a legal guardian is a good idea so the person taking over legally raising your child is prepared and willing to do the task. Also so there is no arguing.

I am choosing god parents to insure that my children go to someone legally. There is not having them go to court or having family fight over them bc we have said who they will go to. It just gives me piece of mind. Plus the family member my child will go to isn't someone in my immediate family, but a cousin who I know would take great care of them and insure that they still see both sides of our family.

It lets you choose who would raise your child in the event that you're not here. I've always liked the idea rather than a court appointing what family member would "get" them (because that's who would decide if you don't)
