Sephora sells a nice sampler that comes with a gift certificate for one of the scents included to purchase a full sized version. I’ve bought it for myself and my husband. What may smell good in store just may not mix well with your natural scent and smell way different while wearing it.

I’d try and find out a brand he liked when he was younger and find it. I forget the one my bf used to wear, but he told me at one point and I managed to find it. He loved it. 
The problem with colognes is that while it might smell good in the bottle, it’ll smell different on the skin, and on different guys. So you have to find something that works with him.
