Beach?

Question

My husband and I usually spend most of May, June, July and August weekends at the beach. Our first baby is due may 30th, when are babies old enough to go to the beach? Obviously we would keep her in a shady spot and not in the direct sun! Just needed help :)￼

We live in Ohio and traveled all the way to Key West (almost 24hrs in the car) with my 4 month old, 2 summers ago and it wasn’t too bad at all! They are so tiny at that age, you don’t have to worry about them getting into the sand, running off, or picking things up. Just make sure you have a fan and a shady spot to lay them. ￼I’d rather take a newborn than a toddler 😅

Keep in mind your body is still going to be healing majorly the first 6 weeks (possibly longer) so I definitely wouldn’t plan anything in that time frame. Sunscreen (per our pediatrician) isn’t recommended until 6 months & their little skin is SO sensitive so you will need to make sure she has 100% physical sun protection (shade, hat, long sleeves, etc) at all times, which may be difficult. I don’t think there is an exact age, just figuring out how to do it safely & what works for you.

If you’re a first time mom and haven’t experienced a vacation with a child before, let alone a newborn. You will be changing your mind about going to the beach every weekend. It’s not at all what you think it’ll be!

Shade, stroller fan, minimal clothing, hat, sun glasses and you should be good at any age, but I agree with the other poster the beach sounds horrible with a newborn lol diaper changes with sand, holding someone while I’m hot myself - 🤢 breastfeeding in the heat is awful. If your used to the heat Im sure it will be better for you. Sounds like nice family time.

Most docs recommend 6 months or more, however you can go at any time just keep them out of the sun and try to go when the sun isn’t at its peak. I’m in Hawaii and everyone brings the babies to the beach :P. Their skin is just really sensitive at the younger ages. So yeah, just keep them shades etc etc

I don’t have an answer but would like to know as well! I’m in the pnw so our beaches aren’t necessarily hot in the summers but we also enjoy weekend trips..

As a second time mom the thought of going to the beach with a new born sounds horrible to me... but I also hate the beach so I may be biases. I would image y’all could make it work as long as you can keep her cool as early as you’d like. Sun exposure isn’t great for new borns because they cannot use sunscreen so finding an extra shady spot is ideal and enjoy mama!
