12 day old feeding concerns

Hi everyone sorry for the long post,

I am new to the group, and new to breastfeeding. This is my 3rd child, but the 1st one I am committing to with breastmilk. I have an extremely fast flow, and to the best I can explain it a water fountain let down. My breasts stopped feeling extremely engorged yesterday morning, and they are now soft and comfortable but still fill up. I was actually nervous yesterday that I had lost my milk supply because they were so soft and normal so I did pump 3 ounces out on both sides in 4 minutes an the 3rd lowest suction. My breasts are still soft but still flowing like crazy. I do not think that's going to change, and little one eats anywhere within 5-8 minutes on one side and is then full until next feed on the opposite breast. My concern is that is not enough time to feed? Everyone keeps telling me he should be eating for 15 minutes on each breast. With 3 ounces on both sides though, his tummy is too small. He isn't fussy in between feedings unless he is gassy which is noticeable by burps, poop, or belly scrunches. And he poops and pees more than the recommended amount for breast fed babies. Normal yellow mush. He also seems to be annoyed now that my breasts are not engorged with latching because they are so soft. I have to hold my breast for it to be hard like for him to latch. I know he is getting it because he gulps, and even chokes sometimes even if I am in the laid back position. I guess I am just nervous & contradicting myself. In short:

Is his feed time long enough if he is pooping and peeing normal, and not accepting more?

How do I get over his annoyance with the softer breasts & latching?

Is it okay to occasionally pump to check my supply, or will that mess up the supply/demand & re engorge me?

Finally, I was told my milk is drying out because it is too soon for my breasts to regulate. They are still full, and thriving though..

Help, a breastmilk newbie 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

First: Keep in mind that the average mom who is pumping between breastfeeding sessions can express between ONE and THREE oz per pumping session (not per breast, per session). Second: It cannot be stressed enough that the amount of milk you able to pump is NOT ever a reliable indicator of how much milk you are producing, nor how much milk baby is taking in. The healthy breastfed baby is usually much more efficient at getting milk from the breast than a pump is. Soft breasts is not an indication of low supply!! Some kids use 5minutes others 45minutes - both normal. And don't looks at the clock feed at first sign of hunger and let baby nurse as often and as long/short as baby wants. It's the wet diaper output that's important, and weight gain if course. Sounds like you are doing brilliantly.

Silje is correct and everything I would’ve said she said already.

And that's why they advised to not pump/pump as little as possible the first 4-6 weeks to avoid oversupply. Like I said sounds like you got this! My best tips is to read up on cluster feeding periods that's about to hit.

I think you are doing great. No need to check. Everyone is different and your boobies probably figured it out sooner than most. If baby is fine and gaining weight. You are good. Keep up the good work. I think when my boobs went soft I would lay on the side and had my son feeding like that. Maybe you can try that position.

This was me. The standard of waiting 10min or blah blah for hind versus foremilk is BS for us ladies with an efficient baby and fast let down. I let down twice in 6 min. Baby is getting there fill and doesnt have green poop then you are doing a ok.

Perfect! You are doing good! Not every woman is the same and the rules on hind and fore milk are averages. You dont need to pump at all unless you are going back to work. You get to, crazily, trust your body that baby is getting enough because magically your boobs meet baby demand as they get older. I did, few times, weigh baby before and after a breastfeed to see roughly how much he was eating using a mail scale.

Also that was my worry I was like how in the heck is this kid getting balanced when my projectile milk is flying all over. Atleast its good for his skin lol.

Honestly as long as his output (nappies/diapers) is how it should be it doesn’t matter if he feeds for two minutes or two hours

Thats what I have been watching, I think he has an overabundance of pee & poop diapers lol!
