Try taking a Pepcid before bed. Tums didn’t work for me but Pepcid works wonders

I’ve noticed lately I wake up in the middle of the night not able to breathe. It happened twice last night, it happened before pregnancy but not a lot. Curious if anyone else has experienced this.
It’s the scariest feeling 😩

I think the connection is that heartburn can cause muscular spasms of the throat.

I’ve been taking an antacid before bed although I’m not sure if that’s the problem. It’s almost like the air way is closed and after I wake up I can’t breathe for 2 seconds until I’m able to gasp for air. I’m not sure if it could be I might be laying on my back after I fall asleep? Not sure if that’s a thing

This is happening to me too! Thought it was my asthma but the inhaler does nothing. Feels like my airway closes for a few seconds until I take a deep breath. Didn’t start until I got pregnant. Doctors said lungs sound good and wasn’t a blood clot 🤷🏽♀️ basically I was sent home with no answers but I hope the fact that someone else can relate makes you feel a little better. I’m 22 weeks and 5 days pregnant. As long as baby is okay and my life isn’t on the line I’m not too worried.

Wow thank you for responding to this!! It definitely helps I’m 22W 2D and it scares the crap out of me every time. I wake up panicking, I just bought a pregnancy pillow so I’m praying this works 🤞! I hope it works out for you . Congrats ☺️♥️

Which side are you sleeping on? I was starting to get quite breathless early on in my pregnancy sleeping on my right, my natural side, but now I only sleep on my left side which is better for me & baby. My pregnancy pillow wraps around my back so it supports me & stops me from rolling onto my back, might be worth looking at.

My due date is 17th April 2021 with my first so we're quite close with our due dates 🙂

It takes a while to get used to sleeping on your left side but after a while, you'll find it's much better & your symptoms should start to disappear. Certainly as you approach your 3rd trimester, it's safer for baby to sleep on your left & your heart doesn't have to work as hard to pump blood around for you both. The pregnancy pillow will help too. I don't like sleeping on my back, mine was more for support as I have fibromyalgia, but it's like being in my own little cocoon, so comfy. You'll be fine, good luck 🙂

Thank you! I ordered a pillow and it’s on its way. Unfortunately I sleep on my right side so I’m going to try and break that. Apparently once I fall asleep I turn onto my back and my spouse has to tell wake me up a few times to turn back over.

Do you wake up on your back? I’ve heard of this happening when the baby is pressing on arteries and makes it difficult to breath.

I don’t have a clue I wake up flailing myself around because I’m so scared, but Thank you I’ll look into that. Maybe a pregnancy pillow will prevent it

This has happened to me once while pregnant (but handful of times throughout my life) I’ve woken up from a sound sleep with this involuntary urge to continuously swallow (nothing but spit and air) while also desperately needing to gasp for air but being unable to as I can’t stop the reflex to swallow. Like waking up choking on nothing. I haven’t thought to ask my doctor about it but I’ve looked into lightly online. It sounds like sleep apnea or Laryngospasm. It’s not a frequent occurrence for me at all so I’ve ruled out sleep apnea for myself.

This has happened to me too sadly. My doctor mostly said to watch for warning signs like chest pains, leg cramps, and heart palpitations (because you’re more at risk for blood clots during pregnancy)Better to call if you’re really worried to be safe if it starts worsening too much as well.
