What do you wish you'd known before using a menstrual cup?

I just started using one again, and was thinking about the things that go unmentioned. I wish there had been more conversation about the mess involved, and how to handle it (especially in public restrooms). I haven't found a way to remove and empty it without ending up covered in menstrual fluids, and with them caked under my fingernails.

I did so much ridiculous research before getting one (though I didn’t research different cups because at the time the diva cup was all I could get in stores and I wasn’t trying to buy it online at the time. There’s definitely a learning curve to it but having the right cup is a huge factor. I did much better with the lunette cup. Though I never had any mess issues with either cup tht might just taking some getting used to

I have used several different types of cups, but I carry rubber gloves and a little packaged wet wipe. So I can empty the cup, replace it, throw the glove away, and wipe my hands before leaving the stall. It's definitely saved me!

Girl ! This has a string you pull and holds in the blood while you take it out super helpful also just carry around some vaginal safe sanny wipes and maybe a bottle of water and santizer for your hands privacy and cleanliness.  Honestly hardly any mess with the flex and the most comfortable i had everrrrr tried .

So I'm not sure this counts but I use these menstrual disc things. I was looking at all the cups but freaked out a little bit with all of the choices and kinds. These still have the mess factor but they do have a new product to help with that but I'm cheap 🤷‍♀️. And honestly this costs me less than the tampons and pads since I had to wear them both to not leak every hour and a half.

This is the cup I use, I had to do a product recommendation in order to comment. I could not change it publicly so I wear tampons the first two days then switch to the cup so I don’t have to change it outside the house.

I wish I knew what size I needed because the small ones overflow every 15 to 30 minutes, but the big ones don't even fit inside me😭

Well I guess I already knew it but I wish I would have listened. The first time I got one I tried it while not on my period so I'd be confident in using it when I am on my period. Big mistake. I should have listened to the women saying to get lubricant with it for that very reason.

i use softdisc and flex discs and am switching to reusable one soon. but i have found that when changing in public, the best way to avoid a mess is to sit as far back on the toilet as you can or squat over it so you can easily and quickly dump into the toilet as you take it out. it's good to have a wipe or toilet paper ready to clean off excess blood too.
