When to transition to a toddler bed?

I know it’s pretty early, but when do you know? Is it just a gut feeling? My current crib turns into a toddler bed by removing the front gate and making it shorter. 
I read it’s between 1  1/2 and 3 1/2 years old. Which seems like a wide range. For those of you with older kids, when did you know it was time to switch? 
My current plan is when I know he can safely get out of the bed easily. But he still struggles with getting off the couch without going face first. 🤦‍♀️

lol, I did it this weekend. My husband thinks I'm nuts but we share our small bedroom with our 3 year old and our 1 year old and I was sick of the crib, so I had my dad make me a trundle bed for the kids. So far it's going really well! The one caveat id add is our room is EXTREMELY baby proof, we have almost nothing in there other than beds and all outlets are covered, and we have cameras. We also bedshare with our son a lot, so I know he already kind of knows how to, and likes, sleeping in a real bed.

Keep  in the crib as long as possible! If they aren’t attempting to climb out don’t rush it! My son had just turned 3 and we rushed it he wasn’t climbing out so we took the sides off and getting him to bed was miserable! Finally at almost 4 he’s a little easier going to bed. My advice is wait as a mom of 4 but obviously do what u feel comfortable with!

As close to 3 as possible. As far as I have read, until they are close to the age of 3, they are not developmentally ready to be trusted to stay in bed all night. That being said, we plan on keeping a sleep sac on for as long as possible since it helps keep the child from being able to climb out of the crib. If they can take the sleep sac off, you can turn the sleep sac around, some cribs also allow for the mattress to be on the floor. Im hoping to keep my babe in her crib for as long as possible. I am so not ready for the freedom it would give her.

We have an almost 5yr old (she’ll be 5 in Feb). She stayed in the crib until we wanted the crib for this baby 🤣 so she was in it until she was 4yrs and a few months! She’s a tiny thing though (preemie baby & only weighs 30lbs now)... never attempted to climb out of the crib, and liked  her crib. She doesn’t wake up when she pees at night still, so wasn’t asking to get up to do that. I know that’s super late to transition... but she didn’t potty train until later (3.5yrs). Most of my friends transitioned around 2/3yrs... or when they were climbing out to prevent them from hurting themselves. I will say we have a convertible crib- and it’s a waste of money. Doesn’t come with any of the transition parts, and we realized we’d rather have her in a full size bed & didn’t want to invest in the parts to transition the crib since we needed the crib for this baby. Sorry, that was pretty long!

We transitioned our girl at a little past 2 years old. She wasn’t climbing out of the crib, but we wanted the crib for baby #2 - who was getting too big for the mini-crib she had been in. Honestly, she’s amazing in the toddler bed and I have zero regrets about putting her there on the younger side. She only gets out of bed when we come and get her and absolutely adores the pink Minnie Mouse bed we got from a friend. Save to keep your kid from toppling out of the crib and hurting themselves, there really is no hard rule once they have the coordination for a bed. Watch your child and get a sense for their adventurousness - and how much you want to deal with it in the middle of the night.

My first 3 kids transitioned to a twin mattress (from a crib) by the time they were 2. This last baby has been sleeping on a twin mattress on the floor since I moved him into his own room at 11 months. He never slept in the crib though. He bed shared with me until then.

We transitioned our son when he was 2 and I was pregnant with baby #2. He was able to be in the toddler bed for my pregnancy and then we moved him to a normal bed before our dec baby was born.  We would have kept him in the crib longer but we needed the crib. Until they start trying to climb out I would keep it as a crib. We will be keeping this baby in the crib as long as possible. 
Once they are able to get out of the bed there’s a whole world of stuff they can get into in their room AND WILL DO IT lol

I.5 seems WAAAY too young. Mine would not be ready yet. She still doesn’t have proper balance even sitting on a small incline or pillow. She’d guaranteed fall out of the bed

We moved our oldest daughter out of the crib when it was time for Alex (dec 19 baby) to move out of the pack n play from our room. He needed the crib, so it was just time! She was right around 2? She got out of the bed a few times, usually super early in the morning wanting to play, but it didn’t take much for her to learn to stay in bed.
