How often do you take your dog out to use the bathroom?

Question

I usually take my pup out pretty early, 6am or whenever he wakes me. 
Next I will try to take him out around 12 pm or so. 
I will take him out again around 4 or 5 pm. 
And usually I take him out right before bed so he feels comfortable throughout the night.
Sometimes I may take him out more just to get him out of the house a bit and move his body. 
My boyfriend keeps trying to tell me that is too much. Any thoughts?
Am I doing things wrong?
I just know how uncomfortable it can be for us humans to have to hold it so I don’t want my pup to feel that discomfort. 
Also my pup always comes to be in the morning no matter what time because he knows I will wake right up to take him out. Is that a bad habit for him and I?
I just want to make sure I am doing things right.

Your boyfriend's an idiot. Tell him to only use the toilet twice a day and see how that goes. Or allow your dog to pee and poop in the house and tell him to clean it up. 
I don't know how often the dogs really need out. But I know they pee or poop everytime they go out and taking them out is easier than cleaning the carpet.

Well.... We take him out at 5:30 am, and then 12:00, and in the evening he's not in the cage so he can open the door himself and go to his bathroom, he knows how to open the door and close it, he learnt it by observing how we humans do it..

We open the door for them around 05:30/06:00 and I close it normally around 12:00. I then open for them about 15:00, then I open the door again for them around 17:00/17:30 until supper is done. They then go out again just before we go to bed which is normally 21:30/22:00. On weekends if we're up late we open for them again whatever time we stop watching TV (anytime around midnight onwards).

We trained our dog with a dog door so he could go out whenever he wanted to. Now we don't have a dog door but he let's us know when he wants to go outside by sitting by the door. Some days he goes out more than others because ultimately it's up to him. They shouldn't have to hold it just cause he doesn't want to take them out. That's not fair to the dog. Plus you're saying you take the dog out and not him so I really don't see why he's concerned about it 😆

I take my dogs out every 2 to 3 hours unless I am sleeping or working. My dogs will hold it all night, until I wake up.

They generally say dogs can hold it an hour for their age up until 6 then you decrease and hour for every year over 6. Obviously not 100% right my 10yr old can usually hold it 8 hours but some nights she cannot and will wake us up. 
Just a general vet rule of thumb for how often you should let the dog out.
