Breastfeeding and formula feeding?

Hey mamas,
I just had a little bundle of joy a few days ago and unfortunately I dont think I’m producing enough milk for my almost 9 lb baby boy. I was wondering is it safe to breastfeed as well as formula feed if my supply isn’t filling him?

I pump and use formula.
I’d love to feed my baby just breastmilk but I don’t pump enough to last all day and night.
I feed her mostly breastmilk all day then make formula bottles at night.

I have the medela SNS system and put formula in that and nurse him while he feeds through that to keep him breast oriented. My son was 9 + and in the nicu was fed as much as he wanted and there’s no way I could keep up!

This can be a viscous cycle if you start formula. Breastmilk production is supply and demand. The more you latch baby and or pump the more milk you will make. Also vice versa the Korean times you use formula or "top off" with formula that is less times baby is taking out milk therefore is less production. If you want to nurse latch baby as much and often as possible. Don't pay attention to the clock or a schedule just yet. Look at cues from baby rooting around says I'm hungry relaxed hands and arms says I'm full. Fussiness doesn't always mean they need more milk. It could be alot of other things. Ultimately tho you have to do what is best for you, no matter the decision! Fed us best. ❤

As long as he has 4-6 wet diapers in a 24 hour period your supply is good! Has your milk come in yet? It should within the next couple days. Has your pediatrician told you to supplement? If not there’s no need to! A little tip that’s helped me is to watch baby’s hands. When you start nursing they’ll be tight little fists and when they’re full baby’s hands will be limp, loose and relaxed.

It’s totally safe. If you want to combo feed, do that. Breastmilk is supply and demand so if you offer a bottle of formula in the mean time you should be pumping unless you want to continue to combo feed.
