Baby Shower Guest List Etiquette??

While I know it's a bit early to be thinking about baby showers (I'm almost 14w), the guest list is looming over me like a dark cloud. I know that my mother plans to throw me one (I'm an only child with no close extended family - we think this will be ok...). And I know I'm going to have to help her with the guest list. My husband is from a VERY large family. I'm not close AT ALL to his siblings and their spouses. Am I obligated to invite them?? They all live close to us.

Invite them all. If you're not that close they might not  go. If they do, hey more gifts for you and baby :). And they can't come back with the "we weren't even invited"

My opinion is Yes! Yes! Yes! Your baby will be part of their family as well. The last thing you want to do is make family (no matter which side) feel excluded from the beginning.

I would invite them regardless if you're close or not. That way later on if they don't show up, you can tell them at least they were invited and plus it won't cause problems in the family and with your husband. Give them the opportunity to celebrate with you. Hope all goes well.

Maybe I should mention that I've never been invited to a baby shower on his side of the family...

Most of his siblings already had kids before we were married but their children have started having kids and I haven't been invited to my niece and nephews' baby showers.

I'm nervous about several making a scene at the party. Talking about the expense, how it must be nice to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth, etc. It's so stressful I'm ready to scrap the entire thing.

I'm 10 weeks and my mom already booked the venue and has been harassing me about a guest list.. I don't have very many friends/family but my husband has a large family and large group of friends.. We're also having my husband at the shower as this is his baby too and I want him to be apart of the entire experience. My mother in law has a problem with the venue, the fact my husband is going to be there.. She has 4 grandchildren already, this will be the first for my mom. My mom is footing the entire bill so my mother in law has no room to complain or moan and groan! I'm just sitting back and going with the flow, not worth the upsetment!

I'm only 12 weeks and have already made a guest list. It's your best bet so you can discuss the potential plans and see who should definitely be invited, who could be a maybe and who you can take off the list for sure. Things can always change down the line but at least you'll have a general idea.

You must invite his mom, grandma and sisters/sister in laws. It's common rule-- if they don't come that's on them. Then I would say that this family should throw you one of their own with his entire family and side of friends. That's what we have always done in our families.
