Does the ignore method work for your toddler when they throw a tantrum?

How do things play out when your toddler throws a tantrum? Like what happens and what steps do you take to deal with it?

Answer

When my 2yr old gets really upset over something silly, I know it’s usually because he’s overtired or hungry. In those cases, I usually get down in the floor ;assuming we’re home) and let him just cry it out in my arms for a minute. When he starts to calm down, I try to recognize his feelings and then explain why things can’t be the way he wants them. (ie: “I know your frustrated, but we can’t bring your cars in the tubby because they don’t like the water and they’ll break”) If he does something like hit or kick me, he needs to go in the corner. I don’t time him while he’s there, I just tell him he can come out when he’s ready to apologize. Usually he stands there for a couple if minutes and then looks over to me to see if he can come over and say sorry.   Sometimes if he does something wrong and gets yelled at, he gets too upset to do anything but sob. I hold him gently, tell him I’m not mad, but that it’s not nice/too rough, to act that way. In any scenario where he behaves inappropriately we always try to enforce apologizing. 
He’s our first, but we’ve had the benefit of watching many nieces, nephews, and friends kids go through these phases in so many different situations. At first I worried I was being too sensitive with him and that he would walk all over me. But he’s actually a really well behaved and respectful little boy. It’s what works for us and honestly it helps to keep me calm, too. When he’s freaking out, it’s really easy to feel my stress start to kick in, but if I take a deep breath and allow him a minute or two to express his feelings, we both feel better within a few minutes. 
All in all, though....toddlers are TOUGH. What works for us may not work for others. Trust your gut!

It made it worse for my nephew and nieces. I watched them when they were little. What helped them was for me to get down at their level and whisper that they can’t hear when if they are screaming/crying and I can’t understand them. And to help them I have to understand them. That doesn’t always work but when that didn’t work out I would tell them okay that’s okay feel your feelings, do you want me to scream with you? Or I would ask if they want a stuff animal or something? And I get them water because they have to slow down and breath when drinking water. And then when they calm down I want fo talk about what went wrong. I want their opinion and I want them to tell me how they wished I handled the situation. I want to do better as a caretaker so I can help them. When they notice that they are more receptive to stuff.

Depends on the reason. Sometimes we ignore it when he’s just throwing a fit to throw a fit over something I’m not going to give in to (like turning off the tv). Sometimes we lay on the floor next to him (not touching him because that makes it worse) if it’s something that is beyond a “but I want it” like he’s overly tired, scared, confused, etc and he’s just hysterical.

I’ve try to ignore my 2 year old, but once he gets to an hour I try to do something to calm him down. He usually gets like this AFTER a nap. Usually if I give him a snack as soon as he wakes up. But sometimes it gets rough.

I just walked away  and told them when you can talk to me without crying than we can discuss what’s bother them
