Doula for homebirth?

Question

If you used a doula for your homebirth, was it worth the money? Why or why not?
I am a doula myself and this is my 3rd homebirth. I've never used a doula and am not sure if it's worth it in a home birth setting. My team will consist of my husband, 2 midwives, an apprentice, and a photographer.

I LOVED having a doula! It took some of the pressure off my midwives. And she got to me first, and it was a good thing too because I had a precipitous labor and the first baby arrived before the midwives did! If not for my doula I would have been completely alone (everybody was still on their way)!

I did not have a doula with my first baby but I had my sister. I would like a doula this time because my husband will be here for this one (he was deployed last time) and I want it just us.

I still had planned on a doula because when baby starts crowning, my SO and midwives attention is suddenly going to be all about baby. Especially if anything seems mildly concerning, the focus will shift to getting baby out asap and me and my emotional needs will fall to the wayside. With a doula, her ONLY priority is you. No matter what's happening,  she's there for YOU. However you want her to be. If something is wrong or could be wrong, she'll be the only one in the room who is still focused on you. Everyone else will have to channel their expertise to baby, to be safe. Which is great, becuase that's exactly what you want. The only downside is your probably still in pain and now feeling vulnerable, scared and alone. Again, IF something is concerning. Which could be a number of things that generally are fine, but are important to be cautious about. This is coming from someone with PTSD and an anxiety disorder, though. I remember with my last birth, I just felt like once people could see her head, no one really cared if I was in pain or not. No one was sweet anymore, everyone was focused and I felt suddenly very alone and scared, even though everything was fine. The room became all about "stop crying, push" etc. BUT to be fair, that was a hospital birth and different SO. My midwife was very insistant that she would not do that to me, but supported my want for a doula wholeheartedly. It really is about you. I'm a very anxious person who has endured sexual abuse, so naturally, I'm a little unique!
