Kicking legs at night

My baby is almost 5 months old and ever since we stopped swaddling him (at the recommendation of his pediatrician) at 4 months he has been aggressively kicking his arms and legs at night. To the point where he barely sleeps because he is constantly waking himself up. I know it’s completely normal for baby’s to wake up throughout the night it i feel that if he wasn’t kicking his legs allll night he would pretty much sleep through the night like he used to. Is this normal?

Yep normal! You want that to happen and you want your baby to have a strong startle reflex for SIDS.

Our LO thrashed about a lot less once he started rolling back-to-front. Now he happily (and quietly) sleeps on his side or stomach.

Normal! Once they get used to having their arms out they will get used to it

What was the reasoning behind unswaddling? We had to unswaddle because baby was rolling. The unswaddling caused wake ups due to what you're describing. It got better after a month. However they do start exploring kicking so your baby may just be doing that at night. You could try the nested bean or weighted blanket or zipadeezip. I never bothered. Some people unswaddle one arm only to begin.
