This is why universal Health care needs be worked on for the usa
I am lucky...I have insurance and when all is said and done I will probably owe just the $40 copay for this visit for my 3 yr old son. But this is why people not fortunate enough to have health insurance don't get to go to the doctor in the USA. This was a 31 min visit where most of the time was waiting for them to come in the room. If I was no insurance/self pay this would be 15% less. I grew up with no insurance and was lucky when me and my siblings got on state insurance. My parents were denied. The perils of the "working poor" poor in the USA. Don't make enough to pay for insurance but because you work you make too much to have help. This is not a rare issue. So here is what taking a very sick 3 yr old cost in the usa...but yes keep telling me how bad other countries have it with their gov't run or universal care. I lived in Canada with my husband (he is from outside Toronto). Yes we had to schedule some elective procedures out a few months but emergencies, immediate needs, etc was always quick and didn't bankrupt us. Also the "you have to schedule so far out there" is a bullshit reason. When we moved back stateside for my husbands job I called to schedule my annual ob appt. I was scheduled at the next available slot...3.5 months later. Every single ob in my mid sized city was like this. Dentist was 3-6 weeks unless it was an emergency, and the gp for yearly check/blood tests for med prescription updates was 4-8 weeks. So much quicker lol.
Edit--to the person asking about the details. I am lucky and negotiated my heathcare into my benefits package instead of a higher pay. More my point was this was one bill. This doesn't not include the lab fees foe the urine culture or blood panel. Nor does this include the 2 follow up visits wr have needed since. This one bill for a 30 min appt. Between all visits, lab fees, tests for a pretty common child issue it turns out we are at $3875.34 if insurance covered nothing. Like i said before I am lucky it will just be our copays. But your the point of that bill I posted is cheaper than most monthly costs is 100% the reason why health care needs to go to a health care for all system. My family was poor we co2ukd not afford the bill or the insurance...thousands and thousands are in the same boat so not sure why my premium and deductible factor into this at all. If you pay 750+ a month for care that is too much. If you have to pay 2000+ for 1 sick child that is too much. Whatever you deductible/premium/insurance terms/no insurance terms are it is all TOO DAMN MUCH. Costs like this is why people who can't afford healthcare but can't afford insurance let small simple issues become huge or life threatening. If your choice is roof over the head/food in your kids bellies over you seeing a doctor the first 2 win out. I know people who almost died from complications of a uti because they thought they could home treat and couldn't afford the doctor. So it became something much much worse. Basic preventive care should not be out of reach to anyone. My whole point...the usa health care system is messed up and wrong. Free market medical costs lives and makes the rich richer and leaves the rest to fend.
