First few days of breast feeding

I just posted about my little guy possibly having a shallowish latch, we’ve been working trying to work on getting a wider latch but nothing is helping/changing. I’m wondering if maybe his latch is fine and it is just normal to have some pain/cracking/bleeding when first starting to breastfeed? He is only 5 days old and all the nurses had said he was doing perfect latching and feeding but I have heard also that breastfeeding should be completely pain free? Is that true? Or do you think it takes a few days for your nipples to adjust/toughen up?
