Has anyone taken their babies to a GI doctor?

The pediatrician called my son “failure to thrive” and recommended him seeing a GI doctor. He’s 18 pounds 5 ounces at 13 months. 
What do they do for failure to thrive, blood work? I don’t know what to expect. I’m not worried, I know my soon is just on the tiny side. He’s a happy boy!

That’s a little odd, is he just on his own growth curve? My daughter is almost 14m and is only 18lbs..... doctor has zero concerns bc she’s on her own curve.

My daughter was 16lbs 7 oz at 12 months and my doc never called her failure to thrive. She was on the low side for sure, but my doctor definitely wasn’t telling us to go to a GI doctor. According to WHO guidelines anything from 2.5 percentile and higher shouldn’t be counted as underfed.

My son was around the same weight at 13 months. Is there any other reason the doctor had stated "failure to thrive"? It just seems odd.

My daughter sees her GI every 3 months, she had failure to thrive at around one month due to a severe milk allergy, which I was giving her through my breast milk. It’s not the same situation as yours obviously, but I can say that the doctors did everything in their power to keep the tests as non-invasive as possible and we never needed an endoscopy, thank God. She had many ultrasounds done when she was hospitalized, and a glucose IV infusion due to low blood sugar, but now that she’s better it’s mostly just a conversation with the doctor, a weigh in and then another conversation with the nutritionist, and then we’re good to go!

So my second son was said to be failure to thrive at his 15 month check up. He gained no weight between his 9 month to 15 month check ups. He was 16lbs and some oz. we were referred to a pediatric GI at one of our local hospitals. They done some blood work and a barium swallow which all came back normal. We were told to switch to a toddler formula. He stayed on that until he was 18m. Told us to start giving him pediasure 2x a day. And to make sure he is eating a ton of calories. Basically all the food we try to avoid, he was to get. Around his 2 year check up, he had put on some weight but was still considered small % wise. He is 6 now and is thriving with no problems. We still do pediasure before school. He is just a little guy. He weighs 44lbs.

My daughter is about the same size, a little lighter actually and we’ve never been told that.
