How to get a breastpump through insurance ?

I should start by saying I live in Canada and have GroupSource insurance through work. I emailed about a breast pump and they said they didn’t cover it? I’ve read you need to get a prescription from your doctor but wouldn’t they tell me if that was the case? I’m not sure how to go about it since they’re pretty expensive and I’m not wanting to spend that much money on something I’m not sure I’ll use.

Most insurance companies in Canada do not cover breast pumps. Having a prescription won’t make a difference if it isn’t covered. For insurance companies that do cover them, yes, you need a prescription. Women who have Treaty Status can get them where I live, but otherwise it’s up to the individual insurer.

If your insurance company said that a pump is not a covered benefit under your specific plan, then there’s no way to make them pay for one. Lots of ppl sell there’s afterwards but you only want to get one that’s a “closed system.” Then you could just purchase replacement parts like tubing and flanges for cheap online.
