How do you start off with breastfeeding ??

Question

So I just recently learned that your milk ISNT automatically there when you give birth?? I might sound SO dumb but how come no one told me this?? 😂😭 how do you go about that? Do I tell the nurses I plan to breastfeed when I go in for labor?? Is the baby going to get enough milk if it’s not there????? IM SO CONFUSED? Are they going to give him formula? How do I know if the baby is even getting enough milk? ALSO what is the yellow stuff? Are they supposed to drink that & then it turns into milk or?? 
SORRY!!! It’s just I have no one to ask & I’m more on the shy side.. 😬 I didn’t know honestly anything & it seems like there’s more & more every time i think I got everything down? 😒

You have colostrum after birth, your baby needs that for the first few days or so then your milk comes in. If you want to breastfeed don't use formula. Put baby to breast as much as possible and your milk will come in sooner

When the placenta leaves your body, your hormones will change triggering your body to start producing milk, but it will take a few days to come in. Like others said, the super nutritious colostrum is all that your baby will needs until the milk comes in. Your body starts producing the colostrum at around 16 weeks into pregnancy.  Baby stomachs are so tiny when they’re born, it’s about the size of a cherry, so they really don’t need much. Nurse the baby on demand (whenever they want to eat) which will tell your body how much milk to produce. Supplementing with formula usually isn’t necessary, unless recommended by your doctor if baby isn’t gaining weight. Using formula can fill baby up, and if they’re drinking less from you your body will produce less.

So you should definitely take a class or do a lot of research on your own if you don’t. If you plan to breast feed your milk could take up to a week or two to come in usually it takes people a couple days but everyone’s body is different. Colostrum is the first yellowish liquid to come out of your nipples, the baby will want to cluster feed and you’ll feed on demand. you will probably feel like baby is not getting enough because they are always hungry but it’s normal and their stomachs are the size of a cherry. That will be enough until your milk comes. Continue feeding on demand. You’ll also probably want to talk to a lactation consultant. There’s so much more information you should know. it’s important to educate yourself on breastfeeding it is not easy in the beginning but when you get it down then it will begin to feel more natural (maybe) everyone is different.

So that yellow stuff is called colostrum. It’s all you make right after birth. It is like the healthiest thing ever and sooo many health benefits! Babies stomach is TINY the first couple days of life and can only hold about a couple teaspoons. So they don’t need anything besides colostrum. You won’t make a ton of it at all but it’s all baby needs. Baby wont be confused lol it’s exactly what baby will want at first. They don’t need formula or anything else
After 3-5 days your milk will come in and replace the colostrum. Baby’s stomach is getting bigger every day and will be ready for milk then. 
After I had baby the nurses just assumed I was going to breastfeed I guess. Right after I pushed my baby out they set her on my chest and within minutes she started moving her head around trying to find nipple to nurse! It was so cute and cool! 
I def recommend speaking with a lactation consultant at the hospital. And take a breastfeeding class. Lots of videos online. There actually is a lot to learn. And it doesn’t always happen easily. I thought I was so prepared taking classes and researching before and all that but my baby had some issues nursing her first couple days. We stayed an extra night at the hospital to have an extra meeting with lactation consultant and I’m so glad we did. She really was so helpful and made me feel so much more comfortable checking babies latch and giving tips and all that

You may have some colostrum ( the yellow stuff).. it's what they baby eats until milk comes in.
Yes you can tell them you want to breast feed.
They will only give formula if you want to until your milk comes. In or if you ask for it (I asked for formula while I as there cuz my baby was freaking out and wouldn't calm down after I nursed her)
It can take a few days for your milk to come in.
