Should we leave the house

My husband and I were sitting watching tv and suddenly we heard a loud sound we rushed to our room where our baby was sleeping and the whole room smelt like burnt metal. In a matter of seconds the whole house started smelling like burnt metal. We put the baby in the car and turned off the heater. Is it safe to stay?
