My 3 mo baby breastfeeds for 5 mins or less

fatima

FTM here. My baby boy used to feed for a maximum of 3 minutes in his first month but fed maybe every 15 minutes. I went to see a lactation consultant and she said I’m doing fine and should feed him very often if he is only feeding for 3 minutes or less and not really putting on that much weight. In the second month he started putting on weight even though i was still feeding him the same frequency and duration. Now at 3 months he goes up to 4-5 minutes on average, 7 minutes only during the middle of the night feeding, so i basically feed him every 30 minutes. His weight is fine now. I don’t really notice any hunger cues until he starts crying so i have continued to feed him every 30 minutes because i dont want him to be hungry and i dont want to wait for him to cry to feed him. Its really exhausting and i had no idea other babies his age feed every 2-3 hours, now that i know, i really would like to get him to feed for longer so i dont have to be constantly breastfeeding. I love him to bits and love breastfeeding but it would be nice if i had an hour free where i didn’t have to breastfeed.

What do you guys think? What can i do to improve the situation? Any advice would be appreciated.
