Relationship that started rocky but changed?

Question

Has anyone ever had a relationship that started rocky the first year but is now a strong relationship? 
Any good advice? I don’t want to force the relationship and not end things when i should. But I also don’t want to miss out on a great guy for workable things?
What’s your experience like or advice?

My husband and i met when we had both just turned 22. He had depression ocd and was an alcoholic. But they went hand in hand. He drank to fall asleep and bury the depression and was depressed from drinking. It was a fucked up cycle. I didn’t drink like at all. I worked. I was in school full time. I just didn’t understand. He wouldn’t stop and he always chose partying over me. We were so young and so stubborn. I wanted him to do better for himself and he just saw me as someone getting in the way of his good time. Cheating I wouldn’t have stuck around for. I met him and I had known his soul for a million years. The first time we hung out It was like I just hadn’t seen him in 22 years and we were catching up. But we fought so much. I gave up a few times. Once he got into his career he found purpose. The drinking slowed down. Things got easier.  We rarely fought. We matured a lot together.  Eventually I was like I’m buying a house and want to start building my adult life you in or out?  He gave 110%. We’ve been together 11 years. 2 boys. He still struggles with ocd depression and anxiety but he no longer drinks.  He’s a great husband father and my best friend. I’d never condone staying in a relationship that was abusive in any form or if the person was cheating especially off the bat.

My relationship with my now husband started rocky. In our case, he was still dealing and healing from an abusive relationship and I was trying to get used to being with someone after being independent and single for so long. We had a lot of issues stemming from what he knew was how to do things (he was with his ex for 5+ years) vs me learning how to be part of a serious adult relationship. (I had never had a serious adult relationship prior to this. Not because I didn’t want to, but because my relationships with previous partners were not what I wanted so things would end.) We actually fought quite a bit but stayed together because we loved each other and we both knew we were worth it. I knew from the beginning that he would be my forever. We’ve been married for a year now and I cannot imagine building a life with anyone else but him. 
Our rocky patch was just me learning how to be in a serious relationship and him learning that I would never hurt him the way his ex did. He also had a lot of healing he had to do and would direct things at me that shouldn’t have been due to triggers, etc. he had because of his ex. We’ve never abused, cheated, or given anyone else attention that should only be given to each other though. Those are rough patches that should be avoided and if any of those would have been present at the beginning of our relationship, I would have left. There’s just no overcoming things like that.

There is a book called Boundaries in dating that teaches about non negotiables. Non negotiables should be character..... Is the person a constant liar, cheater, inappropriate behavior th opp sex, try to get over on people, dishonest, selfish, unable to compromise or course correct when they recognize there is a problem with themselves or the relationship. Able to manage emotions and anger.  Stable in life. Doesnt have any toxic behavior or habits and if they hve them ... they are aware and seeking professional help.
      Dating and being in a relationship is very mich like interviewing a person and evaluating their perfromance before u commit to life with them.... that include before marriage or kids. 
      I suggest u study. Use your online resources. Go look ip oremarriage counceling questions online. Go look ip res flag checklist. Go to your local library or Goodwill to buy books on relationships and marriage! Thats what I did and it has helped me tremendously. It really help put things into perspective.
