How effective is taking BBT to track ovulation?

Kate • Expecting #3

My husband and I just started trying for baby #3 last month. I’m 37 and he is 34. For our son (now 5.5), we had just gotten married and weren’t even trying yet. He was a huge surprise. Three years later, we were lucky enough to get pregnant with our daughter (now 2.5) on our first month TTC. I’m embarrassed to admit that we both thought this meant I’m Fertile Myrtle and he has Super Sperm. Now we started trying in January for #3, and it started out great. I had pregnancy symptoms that matched my first pregnancy exactly. Extreme tiredness, nausea, food aversions... I would have bet money we did it again on the first try. But all BFNs and then AF came yesterday.

My husband is in denial because this has never happened to us before. He is begging me to test again in a few days because this period is lighter than normal, but I feel it in my bones that this just wasn’t our month.

I feel really foolish at being hurt and so sad by this failed cycle as I read about some your stories of TTC for years without luck. We have 2 beautiful kiddos that we conceived with minimal effort (just tracking ovulation for my daughter, but doing nothing but the deed with my son).

It got me thinking...maybe my age is finally catching up to me. Am I not ovulating regularly now that I am 37?

So this month, I have started tracking my BBT. My question is...how reliable is this to determine if I am ovulating?
