cosmetology license??

is it worth it? i’m currently im school right now and no major really interests me and my current one (marketing) doesn’t interest me at ALL. but i do love cosmetology and hair cutting even tho i’m not the best at it and my friend suggested i get my license in it so i can do it for money and like that’s not a bad idea but is it certain that i’d be making a lot of money from that?

No, it’s not certain. The thing about trades is that in bad economies, they’re hit very hard. This is mostly true of those that aren’t necessary for people to have done. I have family in cosmetology and they’ve been struggling hard through Covid. However, in good economies, they do extremely well.

Cosmetology school is a huge commitment. Depending where you live, you’re going 5 days a week for 7 hours a day (based on personal experience). They’re very particular about attendance and will drop you if you fall below a certain percentage in attendance. I’ve been doing hair for two years now and it’s not as easy as everyone makes it out to be. There’s a lot more to school than just playing with hair all day. You learn chemistry and anatomy as well. If you have the desire and discipline to do it, go ahead and do it. It’s 100% worth it in the end.

It’s a great trade. ALWAYS do what you love over what is the “norm” or what is “easy”. I went for cosmetology, but I don’t do it full time, I also have a bachelor’s degree. But I absolutely love everything about cosmo. You can do it from home, work in a salon, or have your own salon. It’s versatile that way. Do what you love and what makes you happy. You can make very good money in the field (obviously where you live is a factor). Where I live, it was a 1,000 course and exam. I say go for it if that’s what you really want.

You need to realize that if you get things like carpal tunnel syndrome or anything else tendinitis etc. and there goes your career, so you need to keep that in mind when it comes to long-term. It’s like when your dance and you break your leg, there goes your career. And obviously with the pandemic, beauty shops were the first to close nail salons etc. because it’s not a necessity it’s a luxury. Most nail salon struggle in the winter because it’s not summer time that people need pedicures etc it’s not a year-round service that’s a necessity. And I will talk to beauty salons in all honesty Supercuts etc., they are struggling big time and they monitor you like there’s no tomorrow. They watch cameras, they watch how long you are sitting there, they illuminate staff, and they time them between clients. But like any job, you depend on tips and not everyone does. Yes you get your hourly wage, at least it’s better than a waiter. But the store makes most of the profits until you own your own shop. I would pick a job that will be a necessity. There will always be crime, (law enforcement of some sort) there will always be the need for the medical field, there will always be death (funeral services) education, there will always be taxes, but more and more people are doing their own and non tax season is very slow which is why most places close. You have to pick something that is a necessity and not too much competition in the area. People will go to a .99 cent store over a dollar store because it’s cheaper. Sad reality. Or if there are a lot of the same type of stores or shops, they will go to whoever is cheaper. ￼so many stores have closed in malls since the pandemic. Retail is taking a hit, restaurants etc. what can you see yourself doing 10, 20 years from now that a robot isn’t going to take your job or will be obsolete. My brother that lives on my basement went to school for art, took him 7 years and a fortune in student loans, when he finished animation and 3D started and what he learned was obsolete. No one wanted him because he didn’t know those software programs etc. with computer they are constantly coming out with new programs and you have to constantly retrain. I would talk to career services at your school and see what they recommend. I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.
