How do you teach your 15 month old to stay??

Question

My 15 month old is very adventurous and physically advanced. When we go for walks in the park or the zoo he wants to walk but he won't hold my hand and he doesn't get that he has to stay close. Do you guys have this problem or have you figured out how to get them to stay?? I want to get a leash and harness backpack but I know those are looked down upon. I want him to have his independence, but not at the risk of his safety...

Just ignore the people who give you looks for the backpack “leash” it’s for your child’s safety. If I was in a crowded area and had a kid who’d run off if use one. 
We personally use a stroller and he actually reaches for my hand when we walk so I don’t have this problem

My daughter used to love the stroller and shopping cart but now she really wants to be independent and walk herself. It’s almost impossible to keep her from taking off unless she is helping push the cart or stroller. I haven’t come up with a great solution tbh but I’m also not above one of those leash backpacks if it means she can be safe but also keep her independence.

Sometimes she does. 
Other times she roams... I keep my eye on her at all times and when she roams to far I go and pick her up

I have no shame in our leash! We live near a pretty busy road and we very rarely walk without it. However, I never yell so the couple of times I've yelled "stop" when he doesn't have it on he stops instantly! In public he's pretty good about staying close and holding my hand, otherwise he is on his leash or in a stroller (or carried).

My now 3yo is very adventurous, fast, and independent. We got him a backpack safety harness (it looks like a dinosaur). He LOVED it, I LOVED it, and it is so useful for so many reasons! Of course we outgrew it once he learned to listen better but he just asked to wear it for fun the other day. I’ve only ever heard 2 bad comments about it- one my uncle joked about it and one my neighbor made a mean joke about it. He got lots of compliments on it actually! I’m a huge fan of them. Go for it!

We use reins on my little boy just for peace of mind that we have control of him but we let him lead the way most of the time and give him plenty of space on them.

Big places we do stroller. Walks like in our neighborhood then she walks. I will never use a leash for my kids cause they know not to walk away (I have a 4 year old also). My son always holds our hand in the store or is in the cart. My daughter doesn’t like to walk in the store lol just outside mostly
