Is American Indian the same as Native American?

I think to say American Indian to describe a Native American is an ignorant thing to say. Like someone else commented, when I think of American Indian I think of someone related to India. I’m not 100% sure though ￼

Yes. They’re the same. They’re both terms for Indigenous people.

The only times I’ve heard/read it it referred to Native Americans. It is a very ignorant term but they were referring to Native Americans. 
I’ve only ever seen Indian-American, not American Indian,  being used as a reference to Americans from India.

I like near Cherokee and most of them call each other Indians and American Indians.

Yes, we call ourselves neither of those though. We’re not from India..so we’re not “Indians”.
