Day 15: Happy Black History Month

Shamya

Day 15: During black history month, I do not just want to honor those who have major achievements or those that became the first black person in a specific field yes those are important but it is equally important for me to honor those who didn't get the chance to become the first. So today we honor Muhlaysia Booker. She was a 22 year old African American trans women who was murdered. Muhlaysia was born on January 14, 1997 in Dallas, Texas. She was attacked on April 12,2019 however she did not die until a month later. On April 12, 2019 Muhlaysia was attacked after she was in a parking accident where she backed into a car and tried to leave. The driver of the car held her at gunpoint until she said she would pay the charges then later on the driver(Edward Thomas) was offered $200 dollars to hurt her and so he did. The assault of Muhlaysia Booker was caught on film while others join in and called her transphobic slurs. Muhlaysia Booker suffered from a concussion and fractured wrist. On April 14,2019 Edward Thomas was charges with assault and arrested. Yet, despite having a concussion and a fractured wrist Muhlaysia still spoke out saying "This time, it was me; the next time, it could be someone else close to you." Muhlaysia still spoke out on the issues affecting the black trans community. A month later on May 18,2019 Muhlaysia Booker was murdered by a man named Kendrell Lyles she was shot to death and found in Dallas, texas. Muhlaysia Booker's death is not the first time a black trans women was murdered. Black trans women are being murdered at drastic rates. The life expectancy of black trans women is 35, yet Muhlaysia Booker, Chynal Lindsay, Paris Cameron, and  Zoe Spears were all killed before the age of 35 and each of these women are black. So today I am honoring the life of Muhlaysia Booker, a young black trans women whose life was takes far too soon, a woman who spoke out and continued to speak out for the rights of the trans community despite dealing with homophobia.
