Day 16: Happy Black History Month
Day 16: Yesterday I wrote about a black trans women named Muhlaysia Booker. Booker was a black trans women who died a month after being attacked. Today I will talk about another trans women of color whose life was taken away as well as the backlash she received from her family. Ashanti Carmon was 16 years old when she started sex work because she was homeless after her family rejected her identity. Ms. Carmom went to sex work in order to survive she also slept on friends couches. At 16 you're supposed to practicing for your driver's license or getting ready for junior prom not entering the world of sex work because your family doesn't accept who you are. However, Ms. Ashanti Carmon entered the sex work to survive on her own. Later, she met the love of her life, Philip Williams and started working at a fast food restaurant. Ashanti Carmon was able to build her life back on her own terms she found a family in the transgender community. However on March 30, 2019 she was found dead on the Maryland side of eastern Ave on the day before Transgender Day of visibility, a holiday celebrating the trans community. So today we honor Ashanti Carmon, a black trans woman whose life was taken too soon, a trans black women from the young age of 16 have to fight for life on her own terms and did a pretty good job.
