That is bilateral breast engorgement. How can I treat it?1. using a warm compress, or taking a warm shower to encourage milk let down.2. feeding more regularly, or at least every one to three hours.3. nursing for as long as the baby is hungry.4. massaging your breasts while nursing.5. applying a cold compress or ice pack to relieve pain and swelling.

Interesting question... this happened to my sister... she used hot compresses but some people say cold compresses... you could get a second opinion from your GP

Warm compress before hand expressing - hop in the shower after 15 minutes of warm compress and have a warm shower and express if possible (or pump if not in the shower). Cold.compress after expressing. I just had a horrible bout of mastitis in Jan - and this worked. If you are wiening off breastfeeding, then only expressing just enough to get relief (do not drain entirely because that will send a signal to the brain to produce more).

If you get a red "hot spot" on your breast(s), then you'll likely need antibiotics to clear up mastitis. Could just be painful engorgement. So keep an eye on it. Mastitis will be extremely painful, red hot spot, and likely fever and aches and chills with it.
