16 week midwife appointment ?

Hi all I’m currently 17weeks1day and I was told I need to book in my midwife appointment at 16 weeks which I haven’t done as I don’t have their number and not heard from them at all in this pregnancy  I saw one at 9 weeks and that was it the only option is calling my gp but I can’t get through to my doctors as they are only taking emergency calls today.  
What happens at this appointment?
Is it necessary ?
UPDATE: just to say that I’ve tried calling the community midwifes with the number in my book many times this morning with no answer so I tried again this afternoon and still no answer so will try again tomorrow with both gp / community midwifes.

I was told I would be contacted between 15/16 weeks but would only be a check in phone appointment. I didn’t end up being contacted until this morning (19+2) even though I phoned triage a number of times since 16 weeks and was continually told they would get in touch with my midwife to contact me. 
Anyway, she apologised for not contacting me sooner as it had been extremely busy and she said it should really be an appointment between 15-18 weeks. It was basically just a check in to see how I am- I didn’t get any new information and couldn’t check anything about baby because it was over the phone. I have my anomaly scan in a weeks time and have booked in to see midwife face to face for more tests and to listen to babies heartbeat at about 24 weeks. 
I think maternity services are super busy at the moment. I would keep trying to get in touch but don’t worry too much yet as you’re only 17 weeks.

The number of the maternity unit should be in your maternity notes so have a look and give them a call.

Hey! I had the exact same problem but wasn't told I needed to booked the appointment myself. I ended up not seeing them until 26 weeks and they were really annoyed at me , definitely try book in for one because they are definitely important. They will test your urine, blood pressure. The babies heartbeat and measure your tummy to see how big babies is ❤️ and just run through any concerns you have or answer any questions for you.
If you can't get through to your GP you should have some numbers in your green folder that you can ring to get a number for your local midwife. 
Usually they put a sticker on the front page of your green folder with phone numbers you can ring xx
