Doctor said to stop prenatals?

Question

Anyone else’s doctor told them to stop taking over the counter prenatal’s? Went in for my first appointment today at 7 weeks. I’m using a different doctor than I did with my first pregnancy and he told me to stop OTC prenatal’s and instead gave me a prescription for folic acid and vitamin b, and said that’s enough. I’ve been taking prenatal’s for months as a regular vitamin, but he said the vitamin a in the OTC prenatal’s can cause birth defects. Now I’m freaking out, I just want to make sure I’m getting all the vitamins and nutrients I need for baby to be healthy. He also said the prenatal’s can cause bad nausea.

Not to worry. My OB did that too, he mentioned that this early in the pregnancy, there’s no need for prenatal vitamins yet. As your baby is too small to absorb any nutrients from you at this moment. 
I was told to stop my prenatals too, as it contains Vit A (aside from all the good stuff) Google Vit A during pregnancy and you’ll understand why it’s bad. 
He told me for now all I need is folic acid. I’m assuming aft the first trimester, I’ll be back on the prenatals again.

Folic acid and folate are different. To ease your mind, you can research the differences. Some people cannot digest man-made folic acid. It is a different compound than folate. Your baby needs folate to grow. It is better to take it in its complete form, folate, just in case you cannot process folic acid. He is looking out for you. Not all prenatals are made equal.

He's right that too much vitamin a in pregnancy is bad, but I've never seen prenatals with vitamin a in them

A general multivitamin is bad, but a Prenatal vitamins should NEVER have vitamin A in!
It’s essential to have folic acid really early on as it helps spine development and that’s one of the first things that starts building. 
Vitamin D is really important too. You definitely don’t want to have a definition you, which is more likely at the moment with people being inside so much (normally we get most of it from the sun). 
Every doctor I’ve spoken to has recommended taking a prenatal. Maybe show him the brand you were taking? It’s true that if you have a healthy diet the voice two supplements are enough, but iron and omega-3 can help you have a smoother pregnancy and are found in many prenatals.

My doc does the exact same thing!! During the first trimester and part of the second she writes me up a prescription and then we go from there! I usually end up taking the prenatal that I choose later on in pregnancy! My Ob is mid 30s for reference so not old!

My Doctor told me the same and I was like ???????.
But basically it was they found high levels of b12 in my blood and the prenatal had b12 (pregnacare conception).  So they advised to only take folic acid and vit d.
I felt I was missing out, but all the advice out there seems to mention folic acid and vit, so I feel if I'm taking that and eating healthy I'm doing enough 🙈. 
I'm 5+2 btw.

Excess amounts of Vitamin A can be bad because of how it’s stored in the body. It’s also important for fetal vision development which is why prenatals contain a safe amount. Probably just some doctors preference to avoid which is fine, but I didn’t want anyone to read this and worry that it’s in their prenatal because it does serve a purpose.

How old is he? Sounds like an out dated belief. Every doctor and midwife I’ve seen tells me to keep taking my prenatal vitamins, especially during the first trimester.

I’d Google him and see about his credentials. Folic acid which is the main component in all prenatal vitamins is to help prevent birth defects.
