Kindergarten 2022 or 2023?

Question

We have been debating on when to start our son in Kindergarten.  I figured I’d ask here since we are all in the same situation of having a little one either entering kindergarten at 4 turning 5, or at 5 turning 6.  We’ve identified pros and cons to both, but think we are leaning toward starting him in pre-k this fall and then starting Kindergarten in 2022 as long as he does well in pre-k.  What are you all thinking? 🤔

As a teacher, I feel more comfortable keeping him back. We don’t have a choice, though. Our cut offs are all September 1st.

Late response here but we will be holding her off a year for Kindergarten. Being the oldest in her class won’t be terrible and I feel like she needs the extra time to play during the day more. She is very active and has a short attention span (more so than her classmates at daycare) so I think it will help her mature a bit more if we wait a year!

We’re holding off as long as possible because we kept him out of preschool this year due to COVID, so he’s behind. Our plan is to put him into preschool this September 2021, then in Fall 2022 he will start TK (or we may just keep him an extra year at his preschool if he likes it and we feel it’s preparing him enough for real school), then Kindergarten in the Fall of 2023.

We don’t have a choice, the cut off is Sept. 1! But I feel with him being a boy, it will be better in long run and give him an extra year of school!

Mine is turning 4, 5 days after cut off. My son already knows so much I feel like he needs to go ahead to school since there isn’t much more I can teach him. My husband wants to hold him back to be bigger in sports 😂

We’ve been thinking a lot about this abs my husband is insisting we don’t hold him back a year so looks like we will be one fo thr younger kids. I could go either way I think social /emotional reasons it might be good to have mroe time but a whole year seems like a lot plus didn’t eveyeone loose out on a year so won’t eveyeone that enters kindergarten be a little socially less ready ??

I’m a kindergarten teacher and I think it truly depends on the child. I think it’s better to give it an extra year if you have any reservations. 
I plan on starting my daughter in K 2022. She’s interested in learning the letter sounds right now and knows her numbers. We’ve been counting things for fun to help her understand that numbers have a value. 
If I didn’t think she’d be ready I’m 2022, I’d have 0 reservation waiting a year though. I think this is the best time to give your child that extra year if they need it. 😊 No rush! 
So maybe this is a non answer. 🤷‍♀️ It’s just not one size fits all since kids are so different.

Totally get your dilemma and it’s one I think a lot of people have! You obviously have to do what you feel is best but there is quite a bit of research suggesting there are more benefits to holding and starting kindergarten later. I taught 3rd grade for years before becoming a SAHM and even in 3rd grade, I could almost always identify who my “young” students were before even knowing their birthday. There are so many benefits at every age to being one of the older ones in the grade. Maturity in younger grades, drivers license, going off to college at 18 vs 17, etc.

I’m kind of in the same dilemma but with preschool. Mine is 3 turning 4, 9 days after the age cut off. We have a preschool that allows 3 year olds near us, but we’d have to figure out whether she goes to preschool for 1 or 2 years. She really wants to make friends after being stuck at home for the last year, and is ready to start learning. But honestly don’t know what the best answer is!
