How/why are you more fertile after giving birth? I’ve tried googling it and it doesn’t tell me why your more fertile? Don’t woman just ovulate once a month? If so I don’t understand how your more ‘fertile’

What I’ve read isn’t that you’re more fertile. It’s just that you can return to fertility right away. 
Which means you’ll ovulate before you see your first period, which is when women can get pregnant.

You can’t reliably track that first ovulation because it can come before a period. And if you exclusively breastfeed/combo breastfeed with formula, it can also make an impact on fertility’s return so it’s more unknown than it is more fertile.

I don’t have the answer to this but I am proof that it’s true. We tried for 3.5 years to get pregnant with multiple losses. We ended up having to do fertility treatments. We had sex once in late September and I got pregnant right away and have had no complications so far. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I asked my doctor this a long time ago, and she said they don’t really know why it just happens that way.

I'd assume that it would have to do with residual hormone levels...pregnancy elevates estrogen and progesterone levels along with DHEA production (a precursor to reproductive hormones).
DHEA is highest when we're in our early 20s and then levels begin to drop over time.
Theoretically, pregnancy could restore lost DHEA levels for a period of time postpartum.
