Keeps taking his diaper off! Why and how do I make him stop??

Question

The other day, my 2.5 year old took his diaper off!! I had him in timeout in the playpen, then when I went to get him out, his diaper was off and he had peed all over.
Today, I put him down for a nap and he kept saying "no diaper" and taking it off again. He just had a bath minutes beforehand and attempted the potty but never peed or pooped. (He only peed in the potty once like a month ago). He will sit on the potty sometimes but won't go. I'm not pushing it at all.
Why is he doing this? And how do I make him stop taking his diaper off??

I think I'd start really trying to potty train at this point. Him taking it off is a sign that hes ready to. It's not gonna happen overnight but I think it would be the way to go.

Everyone is saying time to potty train but taking off a diaper doesn't always mean it is time to potty train. And you're not really getting any suggestions yo help if he isn't ready. 
My middle son is 2 and he used to take his off constantly. He is autistic, completely non speaking, and doesn't understand social cues. He likes to take his diaper off but he is no where near being ready to potty train (and we have tried briefly.)
I had to buy onesies. I just have thin plain white onesies that he has to wear over his diaper and under his clothes. He can get shorts off, but not jeans. And if he just wears a onesie, he sticks his hand up the bottom part of the diaper. Onesies can be a little difficult to find for a 2 year old, but I was able to find some. They're 2T, which fit him even though he is actually in a 3T. But they might be too short for taller kids (mine is in the 30th percentile for height.)

Pampers pants are amazing without the tabs although my 17 month old is currently growing out of the last size 😫😂 even with the nappy pants he pushes the nappy down at the back and scratches himself. I can’t find onesies or vests to fit him anymore but I know he’s nowhere near potty training and he’s being tested for autism too.

We had the same problem and switched to the pampers 360s without the tabs so he couldn’t pull them off and we put him back in onesies for a while.

Maybe (and this is just a random suggestion) keep an eye on him when he has his diaper off, and first tell him "you have to use the potty then, if you don't want a diaper". Then when you see him peeing, rush him to the potty. Do that each time you see him start to pee. I don't know if that'll work, but I also have an almost 3 year old that we've been trying to potty train, and it's kind of what we do. Perhaps just going straight to "hard core" potty training is the route to go. Meaning, if he doesn't want a diaper, then really work at potty training. At this age, I wouldn't try to give him an incentive to keep his diaper on. It might prolong the process. These are kind of my thoughts.
