Pulling hair and chewing it

Stephanie

My daughter has had the habit of grabbing pieces of her hair and pulling it until she gets a strand. Then, she likes to play with it in her hands and put it in her mouth. I don’t think she’s actually eating it thankfully but it definitely goes in and out of the mouth. Usually, she does this when put down to sleep for nap/bed or when in her car seat.

I think it stems from when she was young, she’d grab my hair a lot while nursing and I was shedding like crazy postpartum. I’ve been hoping she’d just outgrow it but hasn’t shown signs of stopping. Me telling her no and trying to stop her or pull her hands away hasn’t been effective and just upsets her. Plus, I can’t do that when she’s in the crib going to sleep.

Anyone have a similar experience or any suggestions on what I can do to help her stop?

TL;DR how do I stop my daughter from grabbing her hair and intentionally breaking off strands to play and put in her mouth on as a soothing method??
