My birth story
We were supposed to goto the hospital at 5 pm on Monday, November 23rd to start a 12 hour dose of Cervidil to get my cervix prepped for the pitocin the following morning. After a 2 pm preop, we were told labor and delivery was full and to call up there at 730 and see if they had any rooms. Disappointed, we went back home to wait. We called at 730 and they said they were still full, and they would call when we could come in, and told me to eat a light dinner. I ate a hamburger 😂 I was so anxious not knowing that I couldn't sleep, so I called every two hours to see if we could come in yet. At 3 am when I called, I was shocked when she told me to come! I woke up my husband(Bart), who had just fallen asleep.
We went to the hospital to and got checked in and upon examination I was still only dilated to a one and fully thick. First they started an iv of the fluids and antibiotics(I tested positive for group b strep). Then they placed the Cervidil at 520 am on Tuesday morning. It was painful. I was examined every two hours and by the end of the 12 hours I was only dilated to a 2 and 40%. After they took the cervidil out, I was allowed to shower, and then the pitocin would be started. At 530pm they added the first bag of pitocin. The contractions came on very quickly, and by 8 they were extremely painful, but I hadn't progressed enough for an epidural. I needed to be a 4 and was still only a 2.5. So they gave me my first dose of Iv pain meds. At first my head was all foggy and I felt great, but it was short lived. I had to have another dose an hour and dirty five minutes later. Bart,my hubs, is extremely protective over me and hates to see me in any pain, and he also gets very nervous over any medical stuff, so I was nervous for him before we started the whole process. He was a rockstar! He was there through every contraction and even though he felt helpless, he tried everything to keep my mind off of it. I have never felt a pain anywhere close to what I was feeling. Every contraction had me gripping the bedrails and trying to move my body around hoping it would help the pain. At one point I made Bart google what could make the contractions easier to manage and he read a birthing ball. So he got the nurse and she brought it in. This was around 10pm I think. I bounced on the ball for what I thought was only 15 minutes(Bart said it was about an hour), and it made the pain much more manageable, but still bad. The nurse kept coming in because the monitor wouldn't stay on, and after the gazillionth time of her trying to adjust me, I told her I would just go back in the bed, even though I felt like dying. She checked me again( an hour early) and I had progressed to a 4, so they placed the epidural. I fell asleep for about 3-4 hours after that. I woke up around 5 am on Wednesday morning. The nurse checked me again and I was about a 5. Around 6 am I was starting to feel the contractions again, so my epi was upped and I was given a bolus. My dr came in to check me at 7 am and I was still about a 5 and a half. Then at 7am, nurse was in the room when the baby's heart monitor started to alarm. I didn't know what was happening, but soon there were about 5 people in the room and I was being put on oxygen and rolled over. They said it wasn't working and were about to try and get me on all fours, but the babies heart rate started to come back up. I didn't know what was happening. I didn't know my bp had dropped to 80/42. I just knew something was wrong. Bart held me my hand and kissed my forehead and we cried together until everything had leveled back out. It was terrifying. My dr came in to examine me around 8, and I had progressed from a 5 to fully ready in an hour. She said the pressure and sudden change had probably been what had stressed out both my body and the baby's.
I started pushing about twenty minutes later, and pushed for a total of about 12 minutes, and my beautiful baby girl was here! Blake Margaret was born at 9:04 am on Wednesday, November 25.
