19 month old temper tantrums? I need help!

Robin

I posted this in another room but I could use all advice.

I think my son is entering the “terrible two” stage. I’m a ftm and my son this past month has started throwing temper tantrums.... as in 2-3 times a day over small things. For example, today he got mad I wouldn’t take my glasses off and laid on the floor screaming for a good 10 minutes.

I’m very aware you can’t reason with toddlers this age and they are having tantrums because they can’t communicate and are figuring out things don’t always go their way.

However, what is the best way to help my 19 mo son with tantrums If you can’t reason Or explain things quite yet to him?

I try to say simple phrases like “I know you’re mad, but mama can’t take her glasses off” and try to calm him down or redirect him, but sometimes he just will not calm down and can’t be redirected to anything else. He just screams and cries.

For example, yesterday he wanted me to walk in circles with him. I did and then changed directions and he got so mad because he wanted me to go his way, not the other way. I tried to calm him down, and then tried to pick another toy to play with but he just wouldn’t do anything else except get upset.

What do I do in that situation? Give him his way? Use it as a learning curve that if he plays with someone else it doesn’t always go his way?

I don’t want to just give him his way if he can start to understand things don’t always go his way, but also don’t want to just make him upset and mad if he mentally can’t start comprehend that concept.

I guess I just need advice on the best way to handle his tantrums so he can start to learn from them.
