High chance being 1-5%? ;(

Question

Hey ladies - I’m sure most of us in this group are falling into the 1-5% chance of getting preggers. I had my only child at 38 naturally, after trying for a couple months. I’ve been divorced three years now. I’m now with the most incredible fiancé, and want to give my 8 year old son a sibling so badly. My fiancé’s children are grown. This is the catch: he had a vasectomy 12 years ago. I’d prefer to try our chances naturally first and despite him being on board to get a reversal, I don’t know. Would we be wasting our time with that? Is it best to go the IVF route right away and that way he can bypass a reversal and we increase our chances right off the bat? I’d just really like to try naturally first (and if it happens it happens but if it doesn’t I’ll just count my blessings). I realize even after a reversal it could take months for the sperm to start doing its thing again. Trying to figure out the best approach yet it’s not like time is on our side. I welcome all your thoughts. :)

I would go both routes to have plan A and plan B. Plan A being IVF ICSI. You need to keep in mind that women above 40 usually high high FSH need lots of medication to mature few eggs. Numbers drop fast from AFC to follicles extracted to eggs collected to mature then fertilized. With every step the drop rate is from 80 percent to half. Example 11 follicles 7 eggs 4 mature 3 fertiluzed 1 made it day 3 or five. However some women's embryos are so poor quality they stop growing day 2 to 4. Embryos that made it might not be freezable and thrown. Then the implantation rate is lower for older women and the chance for life birth in 40 is ten percent after 45 is about 5 percent. So you see how with fewer less quality eggs you night get zero embryos to transfer implant or to survive past 3 months. Unless you are rich and willing to undergo the torture of 5 plus ivfs it might not happen with own eggs. At least with reversal you can still try naturally for free. Sperm is cheap eggs are very expensive to produce in greater numbers. Their age cannot be reversed. If eggs are old good sperm is crucial because on average 1 out of five fertilized will make it to blastocyst even with ivf with old eggs. They do not go miosis correct and they fail to divide cells correctly or just run out of steam due to poor mitochondrial health.

I would go IVF. We tried 3 years on our own but did one IVF cycle and I’m pregnant!

We decided to try the vasectomy first. It had been three years since the procedure. We did get pregnant a couple of times after the procedure, I’m 42 and both pregnancies ended in a loss. I don’t regret trying with the reversal first because Dr Wilson is very affordable. My insurance covers IVF and we are going this route so we can embryo test. I would have loved to avoid the intervention but this is how it’s working for us.

How could you try naturally until he has had a reversal? Even to do IVF with his sperm, he would need a reversal. If you want to raise a child together, maybe look into embryo adoption.
