Midwives?

Question

Has anyone used a midwife during their pregnancy? I discussed labor options with my OB today and because I would prefer not having an epidural unless necessary she has sent me to a certified nurse midwife on her team. I'm a first time mom and just want what's best for my baby. I've gotten some pretty rude comments from family about this choice and would love to hear about positive experiences from women who have actually used a midwife.

Midwives have a wealth of (different) knowledge about birth. I'm sure you'll appreciate the different perspective. I am in the process of interviewing and switching to a midwife.

I had a midwife for 2 out of 3 pregnancies and have a midwife this time as well. It was absolutely the best experience of my life. She was so attentive to me and my needs and did so many things to help with bonding with the baby. I actually pulled them out myself and brought them to my chest to clean them off. It's all based on preference as I have a gf that thinks it's gross and didn't want baby til he was cleaned off. I on the other hand thought it was amazing and can't wait to have that experience again with this baby girl.

I am a FTM as well and have had a midwife from the beginning. I started going to her before I lost my first pregnancy in July and she and her team were fantastic support going through the miscarriage. And then when I found out I was pregnant with my current baby they were so happy for me and she has gone out of her way to reassure me and help me deal with my obvious anxiety during this pregnancy. I had to go to the ER last week for some minor bleeding. She came by the ER (even though she did not have to) when I got there and did a Doppler for me just so that I knew the baby was still ok and I could relax while they tried to figure out the cause of the bleeding. (Diagnosed with marginal placenta previa). She followed up with me the next morning and the following day. Had my follow up appointment today and she is just amazing and supportive. My mom had great OB's for all of her pregnancies but she has been greatly impressed with my midwives and their team. They have a great amount of knowledge and are very much about you being comfortable with the process, taking care to ensure you and your baby are doing well and making sure you have the support to go through your pregnancy and delivery how you want. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I actually just met with a midwife practice today. I am definitely switching my care to them. The model of care is very different from a hospital/ ob birth. Also at the birthing center they do not provide epidurals, so the option won't even be there, which I kind of like. You can do this! Watch some documentaries and read up on midwives, it's really a great thing to have access to!

I gave birth to my son naturally with a midwife and it was a great experience! The doctor is usually in yr building with them if you get into a situation where you need a medical doctor but I am using midwives again because I feel like they listen better!

I have always preferred the midwives at any office I've gone to. They just feel more relatable and were always so much more willing to take the time to answer my questions.

I used a midwife with my first 10 years ago. My experience was great! My labor was short and sweet. Totally not normal but it does happen. I was holding my daughter an hour and a half after my water broke. I didn't have time for an epidural or anything else. The midwife was wonderful through everything.

And let me add... I am very happy so far with my choice of going midwife. But cannot wait to hear what my sister says when she finds out I'm not planning an epidural this time. With the first two I did epidural but neither time did they work 100% correctly. They helped but I've already started talking to my midwife about my other pain management options. I'm thinking nitrous to help with the peaks of the pain.
