Baby cereal?

My baby had his 4 month appointment today and the doctor said we could start with baby cereal. I really would like to hold off until about 5 months. He’s ebf and weighs 15.6 pounds so he’s growing great. Has anyone started or made a decision yet

My doctor said to start with iron rich foods.  So you can do iron fortified cereal or you can also do meats and veggies.  She also said the recommendation to start is 6 months, but it used to be 4 and we could start anytime we feel the baby is ready.  The baby must have good head control.  I’ll probably wait until closer to 6 months to start but will see if she shows interest sooner.

My doctor prefers to wait until 6 months so that’s what we are doing but there is nothing wrong with giving your babe cereal if you decide to! Your doctor told you it’s okay so it’s completely up to you 🙂

Personally we don't ever do baby cereal. I have found it to be really messy and just not worth the hassle. When we had our first son in 2015 the doctor told us it was still okay to mix in the baby cereal with a bottle. When our second son was born in 2016 it was no longer considered safe and a choking hazard. I tried mixing it once and feeding it and it was just so messy. We just stuck with purees.

We started giving cereal at 4 months exactly. It is messy and there’s no nutritional value but it fills there belly for better sleep and it’s actually very good practice for using utensils 🥄 we enjoy feeding it to him and he enjoys it too! It’s a good experience overall
About an hour after his first bottle we give him 1 tablespoon of cereal mixed with  3 oz formula to get it to “applesauce” texture 
We give him a second bowl an hour after his late afternoon bottle. 
Always offer it after a bottle because you want them to have there nutrients first and not be too full for that. 
We will be starting purées closer to 5 months. I’d rather waste the cereal during practice than the purées

Our pediatrician said we could start giving her rice cereal at her 4mo appt but I'm not going to. There's no nutritional value to it and I was going to do blw at 6mo old, as long as she's showing signs of being ready. I waited until 6mo with my first and she has the same pediatrician. I can't remember if she said we could start at 4mo with her or not.

Our pediatrician told us we could start solids at our 4month appointment as well. I like how she explained that for now it’s more recreational than nutritional for them. 
  I planned on waiting till 5months but after noticing our little one was watching us spoon food into our own mouths we decided to give purées a go. We only do it on fridays and weekends, trying a new veggie or fruit after he’s had the same one a couple times. It’s been fun to watch him react! Definitely just recreational - he gets more on him than in him! 😂

We gave some to my first baby back in 2017 and she got so constipated from it that we had to take her into the doctor for them to give her a suppository to help her go. We tried everything and took her to the doctor at 9 days without 💩 they told us to bring her back if it was day 12-14 without 💩 & we ended up having to. She advised we stop and see if she regulated & she did. At our baby’s 4 month appointment they didn’t even mention cereal this time 😬
