How do you think a middle name should be chosen?

I always believed that your middle name should have some sort of tie to your family, gives the middle name more sentimental value. I have always had the girl middle name Jean picked out after my grandma and the boy middle name James after my father in law. 
I was raised by my grandma so I tend to have a more "old school" view on things but it kinda boggles my mind when I see people posting asking strangers to give a middle name for the first name they picked out. 
This poll is just for fun and just for inquiring minds so please don't come for me for asking a general question.

Whatever you want. There are no rules. Some of my siblings have names that sounds good with their first and some have family middle names.

My son’s middle name is his great, great grandfather’s name. His due date was also the same day as his birthday...but he ended up being born four days before that. His middle name also happens to be very close to my fiance’s dad’s name, but that wasn’t intentional. 
We will try to incorporate some family meaning into our other kids’ middle names as well, but overall I don’t think there’s a specific way a middle name should be.

Agree with everyone saying what the parents want. For our children, they will have special meaning as my mother and my husbands brother have both passed so we plan to give them names connected to them ❤️

My mom gave all her kids middle names she just liked. None of us had family names. And I liked that because my middle name is unique. With friends I could guess their middle names so easily... Ann, Marie, Rose, Elizabeth. 
My middle name is Courtney. I always loved having a different name than anyone I ever knew. 😊

My family has never used family names as middle names before until my brother chose his mil names and our grandmother's names for his daughters middle names. Now I'm also pregnant with a girl and am choosing my mums and mil names for the middle names. I just love the idea of them being honored.

I only choose family names if I absolutely love them. I ask myself, “would I use this middle name if it wasn’t a family name?” If the answer is “no” then I refuse to use it. I personally will never understand why people use family names they don’t love. My children’s first names and middle names always end up randomly, connecting to our families so they do have deep meaning to us. I also fully believe once you use a name, it becomes a new family name for future generations to use if they like. Putting a lot of thought into a middle name and it being your child’s name makes it special in its self.

A combo of family meaning and what sounds best. Named my daughter Lydia Rose, for my mother Rossana. It has meaning and sounded nice together, but if my mom's name was something that didn't work with her first name, we would've picked something different.
