Question about birth control / hormones

I've been taking birth control for a couple of years now. But someone told me they stopped taking birth control and once it was out of their system they felt more clear minded and less hormonal. I thought maybe my birth control was making me crazy and extremely emotionally in the few months before I stopped taking it, also because it's unnatural.
When I say crazy I mean.. High emotions, somewhat irrational in the sense I take things way too personal and having a hard time letting go of things quickly.
I stopped taking the pill around June, I felt a lot different at first and it was okay. But around the end of August, I started to feel kind of crazy again and extremely overwhelmed with anxiety and other emotions.
(BUT, I'm also in school and finals are coming up and I'm having a lot of relationship/communication issues with my boyfriend whom I live with.)
I am wondering if because I took birth control // the pill for 6+ years, and then stopped, could the lack of the hormones my body depended on for so long be effecting my hormone balance now? Thus, effecting my mental health?  (Anxiety, moods, etc)
I'm trying to eliminate different possibilities and gain more knowledge on the hormone aspect of the pill.
I've felt extremely out of character for 6+ months now. Any advice will help.
