Should u have to ask your partner for a hug, whilst crying?

Communication is key. Not everyone thinks along the same lines as you do. When I'm hysterical crying the LAST, and I mean, DEAD LAST thing I want is to be touched or hugged. What I want is for the person to just be present with me and listen. 
If you want a hug. Ask for one and don't internalize the lack of one.

Yes. No one person communicates emotions the same way. Some people don’t want to be touched when they’re sad. Some people cry when they’re angry, not sad, so hugging would be misplaced and invalidating. You never know. Maybe not every single time, but at least have a discussion with your SO about your likes/expectations when you’re experiencing emotional distress.

When I’m crying, my husband analyzes the situation first. He knows that sometimes I don’t want a hug. Other times, he knows that a hug is exactly what I need.

I think it’s pretty obvious when your partner is crying that you should give them a hug? But some people do need you to tell them so communicating that would be a good idea

I'm not an affectionate person. I dont always feel comfortable giving hugs. Sometimes I dont know if the other person wants a hug. Maybe they dont want to be touched and I want to respect that. I would let your partner know that when you are upset you would like a hug, and if they dont let them know you could use one in the moment. Not everyones love language is the same

You need to communicate ahead of time your needs and wishes. A lot of people like their space when they are emotional. Nothing should almost ever be simply expected when it comes to this. It’s on you to communicate

In our case my husband knows better than to hug me when I’m crying 😅 I don’t like it at all and it makes me cry harder. However, I didn’t magically expect him to know that. The first few times he saw me crying I just explained I know you want to comfort me, but please don’t hug me. I like to cry alone until I can calm down a bit. So that’s what happens, I get what I need to out and then we can talk about it and he can comfort me once I’ve calmed down. 
Healthy relationships are ALL about communicating. Never expect someone to read your mind
