Is Dakota too similar to Koda?

We are pregnant with our third baby boy and I love the name Dakota for him. However my sister in law wants to use the name Koda for when she has a baby (she is wanting to try for a baby later this year). I wouldn’t plan on using the nickname Koda/Kota for Dakota but don’t want to annoy her by using Dakota. What are your thoughts?

if you want to keep the name for her then i’d probably choose something else. but you’re the one that’s pregnant and they won’t be siblings so if you really wanted to use it, it’s not a huge deal

I didn’t vote because yes, I think they are similar, but I don’t think that should stop you from using it. Because they aren’t the same name and she’s not even pregnant yet. It’s possible she may change her mind when the time comes to name her baby.

If the question is whether you still have the right to use Dakota, the answer is certainly yes.
If the question is whether she might reasonably be hurt and sad if you use Dakota, the answer is also definitely yes.
Personally I’d try to find a name I liked better.
Can you just ask her how she feels about cousins with similar names? She might be okay with it.

You are pregnant and know the gender so you should use the name you want. Once she’s pregnant she may change her mind or not have a boy. Don’t base your decision on what someone else wants.

I think it’s way too close for you to name 2 of your kids that. I don’t see anything wrong with cousins having very similar names. I think you both proceeds g with the names you like would be just fine.

Normally, if it was a distant friend, I would say not to worry about it, but since she is family, and confided in you that she loved the name, I wouldn’t do it. Kota/Koda is short for Dakota. It’s basically the same name, and yes, it can be used for both boys and girls. She could use it whether it’s a boy or a girl. When people who are family or close friends, tell you a name they love, it’s because they trust you enough, that they feel like they can share it with you. I would for sure take it personal. Some people put a lot of thought into names, and only share with people who they feel comfortable with.
