Gift ideas for 3yo boy?

Our nephew's birthday is coming up. We don't see him very often (like just a few times a year), so we don't really know him too well. My husband is no help, so I have to figure out a gift and I have no clue what to get him.

Wouldn’t hurt to message mom or dad and ask for the little guys current interests. I’m sure they won’t be offended and probably be happy you reached out to get him something he’d actually enjoy. And if for some reason you’re nervous to do so 3 years is where they are really starting the learn and grasp the concepts of things so learning games like matching games would be good, sensory toys are great still and for the warmer weather you’d always be safe with outdoor or beach stuff.

My three year old loves everything with wheels, brio Builder, paw patrol. 
But if in doubt ask the parents - for all you know he has mountain of toys but needs something else.

I'd ask his mom/dad. Maybe they want people to get him useful things, like clothes, because he has enough toys. Maybe he's interested in xyz. Maybe they don't want gifts at all. 
It's easier to just ask the parent for suggestions, they're more than happy to give suggestions
