New Portable Air Conditioner Has Awful Chemical Smell

Question

I bought a Midea Portable A/C at Walmart, and out of the box it smells awful. Like chemicals. Is that normal? I am overly sensitive to smells, so to me it gives me nausea and a headache. I haven’t even turned it on, and it has that smell. 
Has anyone bought a new A/C unit before that can share their experience?

I don’t have experience with a portable AC unit, however I think it’s quite normal for any new product like that to have off-gassing at first. I would try turning it on and letting it run nonstop for a few days in a well ventilated room where you don’t spend much time so that it gives the unit some time to air out. If it’s still unbearable to you I would return it because that can’t be healthy to breathe. I’ve returned plenty of rugs if they have any obvious smells when I unroll them, so I’d definitely return an AC unit for the same reason.
