How long do you wait?

What do you think is an appropriate amount of time to wait for someone to commit? 
I fully understand and see the benefit of getting to know someone and take your time building up into a relationship. But how long do you wait before you realize the commitment is just not coming anytime soon or at all for that matter?
My dude and I are practically a couple on all levels including sex but he won’t commit and I don’t want to waste time on someone who doesn’t want the same thing.

I’d say after a couple months if you’re not willing to commit - it likely won’t happen especially when he’s getting his cake and eating it to.

A few months. But if someone straight up is saying they don’t want to commit, listen. If someone really wanted more, they wouldn’t hesitate imo. I dated a few guys like that, hung out/went on dates/went to bars with friends etc but they wouldn’t commit. I was a placeholder, it wasn’t there for either of us and you can’t force it

I waited about 4-5 months with no label yet was doing all the "gf" things. I left after realizing it wouldn't work. It was like he was embarrassed of me because he wouldn't commit or go public. 
He shortly after got in a relationship with someone and went public. And that's okay. I'm glad he found someone to fit him better.

I forgot an important part which might clear some of it up. 
He is very interested and wants something he just doesn’t want to rush or be pushed into it if he isn’t ready. Which I can understand but confuses me.

You should have ask if he is looking for long term or casual dating. I usually wait 6 months to figure out if the guy is committed or not. If I see he’s not committed then I need to cut him off.

It’s hard to put a timeframe on it, but in my experience if a guy wants to be with you he will make it known and make sure that he doesn’t let you go.  If a guy isn’t making his intentions towards you clear or isn’t willing to have a conversation about it then it isn’t meant to be.

I waited two months of seeing my now SO. I told him I wasn’t going to wait to be told he’s getting serious with someone else so if he doesn’t want to commit, that’s fine but I need to cut ties and he ended up asking me out later that week lol
